Feeding More Than Summer Fun
Summer brings sunshine, adventure, and cherished traditions – from poolside splashes to campfire stories. However, for millions of children who rely on school meals for daily nutrition, it can also mean uncertainty at the table. In the United States, many children face hunger and food insecurity. About 1 in 5 children, roughly 14 million, live in households struggling to provide consistent food. This affects 17.9% of all households with children, highlighting the widespread nature of the issue.
Childhood hunger can have serious and lasting effects on a child’s development, health, education, and overall well-being (nokidhungry.org):
- Physical Health Problems
- Weakened immune system
- Slowed growth and development
- Increased risk of chronic conditions
- Cognitive and Emotional Impact
- Difficulty concentrating
- Lower academic performance
- Behavioral issues
- Social and Emotional Development
- Low self-esteem
- Social isolation
Childhood hunger doesn’t just affect the body; it prohibits a child’s full potential, both now and in the future.
Fortunately, communities and programs across the country are stepping up to ensure that no child misses a meal just because school is out. Together, we can make summer a season of nourishment, joy, and possibility for every child. Won’t you join us in fighting child hunger? YWCA Northwestern Illinois is currently participating in an agency-led challenge to benefit Rock River Valley Pantry’s annual Peanut Butter and Jelly Rally. Their goal is collect 20,000 jars of peanut butter and jelly to meet basic food needs for families with school-aged children.
Ways you can help:
- Invite your organization, neighborhood, family, church, or school to donate jars of peanut butter and jelly. You could split your group into teams to add a bit of competition and motivation to achieve the highest amount. The “winning” team could receive a prize such as a homemade treat, a free “jeans day” at work, or having their lawns mowed.
- Donate online: rrvp.org/donate – $20 buys 12 jars of peanut butter!
- Make an individual donation at the Rock River Valley Pantry or participating locations:
- Rockford Community Bank
- YMCA
- OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center
The thought of any child feeling the ache of hunger is something that should move us all. No child should have to wonder where their next meal will come from, but the good news is that we have the power to change that. By donating, we can help ensure that every child has access to the nourishment they need to grow, learn, thrive, and enjoy the carefree childhood they deserve. Every jar brings comfort, strength, and hope to a young life. Together, let’s make sure no child goes hungry this summer.
