Become A Tutor

If you are passionate about literacy and interested in making a meaningful difference in someone’s life, consider volunteering as a tutor.

Tutors must be at least 18 years old, live in the state of Illinois, and have earned a high school diploma or GED. No previous teaching experience is required. Tutors are required to participate in a training workshop before being paired with a student.

Tutors are asked to commit to two hours a week, at the time and a public location of their choice. Tutoring sessions can take place virtually or in person. In-person locations may include the public library, coffee shops, or the YWCA Literacy Council learning center.

“SO OFTEN I FIND THAT I’M TRYING TO INSPIRE MY LEARNER BUT I’M THE ONE WHO ENDS UP BEING INSPIRED. TUTORING GIVES ME A CHANCE TO ENCOURAGE, HELP AND MOTIVATE MY LEARNERS. THIS PROGRAM IS VERY REWARDING FOR THEM AND FOR ME!”
