Breastfeeding & Stress: How It Affects You and Your Baby (and What Can Help)
Let’s talk about something a lot of new parents experience but don’t always feel safe saying out loud: stress.
Becoming a parent, whether it’s your first baby or your third, is a big transition. The sleepless nights, body changes, feeding challenges, and everything in between can sometimes feel like too much. And when you’re breastfeeding, stress doesn’t just impact your mood—it can affect your milk production, too.
How Does Stress Affect Breastfeeding?
When you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or “touched out,” your body can have a hard time letting down milk. That’s because stress hormones like cortisol can interfere with oxytocin, the hormone that helps your milk flow.
You might notice:
- Slower or less milk letdown during feedings or pumping
- Fussiness at the breast
- Feeling tense or disconnected while feeding
- Even guilt or worry about how much your baby is getting
And guess what? You’re not alone and you’re not doing anything wrong.
Baby Feels Stress Too
Babies are incredibly in tune with their caregivers. When you’re stressed, your baby can sometimes pick up on that energy, which can make feedings feel more difficult or emotional.
That’s why caring for you is just as important as caring for your baby.
Ways to Care for Yourself (Yes, You Deserve It)
Here are a few small ways to reduce stress while breastfeeding:
- Take deep breaths before nursing or pumping
- Play calming music or white noise
- Ask a partner, friend, or home visitor for help
- Stay hydrated and eat nourishing snacks
- Talk to someone you trust about how you’re feeling
Remember: it’s okay to need support. You’re not meant to do this alone.
