Father’s Day is a time to celebrate the dads, grandfathers, stepfathers, and father figures who play such an important role in the lives of children and families.
Research continues to show what many of us already know: children benefit from having caring, involved adults in their lives. Fathers and father figures help children build confidence, develop healthy relationships, learn important life skills and provide the love, support, and encouragement children need to thrive.
The good news is that building a strong bond with your child doesn’t require expensive outings or elaborate plans. Often, the most meaningful connections happen through everyday moments.
Here are a few simple things you can do to strengthen your relationship with your child:
- Read a book together.
- Take a walk, visit a park, or play outside.
- Ask about their day and really listen to their answers.
- Cook a meal or work on a project together.
- Create a simple tradition, like a weekly movie night or special outing.
- Put away distractions and spend a few minutes focused entirely on them.
- Tell them you love them and that you’re proud of them.
Children may not remember every gift they receive, but they will remember the time, attention, and encouragement they received from the important adults in their lives.
At YWCA, our Family Services programs are committed to supporting healthy parent-child relationships and strengthening families. We know that strong connections build strong families, and we are proud to walk alongside parents and caregivers as they nurture safe, supportive environments where children can flourish.
We also want to recognize the incredible work being done by the Fatherhood Coalition through Brightpoint and Fatherhood United, two wonderful resources supporting fathers and families in our community.
Fatherhood United is celebrating Father’s Day weekend with two free family events:
Saturday, June 20 – Join them at Fairgrounds Park for an afternoon of food, music, fun games, and prizes.
Sunday, June 21 – Cool off at the Pool Party at Hawkins Aquatic Center.
Both events are free, and families who RSVP online will receive a Father’s Day backpack.
This Father’s Day, we celebrate all fathers and father figures who show up for the children in their lives—through the big moments and the small ones. Your presence matters, and the time you spend together helps build a foundation that can last a lifetime.
