Rest, Recharge, and a Little Holiday Magic:
How YWCA Staff is Spending Our Time Off

As the year winds down and we get a chance to catch our breath, everyone seems to have their own perfect recipe for rest, self-care, and a little winter fun. For some, the holiday break is a chance to slow down, cozy up, and recharge; for others, it’s the perfect moment to get outside, explore, or cross long-awaited goals off the list. No matter what the approach, one thing is for sure: we’re all ready to embrace a pause before the New Year.

For many, this break means leaning into simple joys like playing games on our phones, catching up with family and friends, and savoring the freedom that comes from stepping away from daily responsibilities. With no deadlines to meet and no alarm clocks required, soaking up every bit of free time feels like a luxury.

Of course, nothing says “holiday downtime” quite like a Hallmark movie marathon – the all-day, blanket-wrapped binge that requires nothing more than hot cocoa, snacks, and a willingness to predict how quickly the main characters will fall in love. Others plan to indulge in their favorite reality shows, finally catch up on homework for degrees they are pursuing, or simply spend time with loved ones.

For those craving fresh air, winter adventures are calling. From hiking through frosty trails to sledding and even cross-country skiing, there’s something refreshing about embracing the chilly outdoors. And for indoor cozy types, the plan is just as inviting: break out the space heater, sip hot chocolate, and make a dent in the NYT crosswords. Some are also carving out time for books/audiobooks, and the holiday break provides the perfect quiet window to get lost in a few good stories.

One of the most exciting traditions shared comes from someone who made a promise to travel somewhere new each holiday season. This year’s adventure? Spending Christmas in Toronto, which will be their first time traveling outside the country. It’s a beautiful reminder that the holidays can be a time of exploration and new beginnings.

Creative spirits are looking forward to knitting, crafting, baking, and thrifting, while others plan to read, clean, organize, and give some long-neglected cabinets the makeover they desperately need. And let’s be honest: post-Christmas clearance shopping is practically a sport to be enjoyed by the most strategic shoppers!

Families are planning magical moments as well, like taking the kiddos to see Christmas lights. And of course, a few furry family members are about to get seriously spoiled. Whether we’re traveling, tidying, watching, wandering, or simply resting, this break is a chance to recharge in whatever way fills us with joy. Here’s to quiet moments, winter adventures, warm drinks, good stories, and starting the New Year refreshed and ready.

Happy Holidays!
